AVIATION

WELCOME TO THE PROFESSIONAL AVIATION PROGRAM AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA AT MONROE

ULM has a proud history in Aviation. In 1939, ULM (then Northeast Junior College) became one of 404 colleges to participate in the Civilian Pilot Training Program to train pilots for World War II. Flight instruction was conducted at Selman Field and classroom instruction was given on the campus.

In 1967, Northeast offered the first four year Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation. Today, the ULM Aviation Program works in conjunction with Monroe Air Center, a Part 141 flight school on the Monroe Regional Airport. Students take flight instruction at Monroe Municipal Airport and ground school on the campus. All FAA flight certificates are accepted at ULM and college credit is given as follows:

  • Private Pilot Certificate – 7 hours
  • Commercial Certificate – 6 hours
  • Instrument Rating – 6 hours
  • Flight Instructor Rating – 6 hours
  • Instrument Flight Instructor – 6 hours

The Aviation Department now has three new full motion flight simulators from Fidelity Flight Simulation, Inc. qualified by the FAA as level 3 FTDs. Now our students can have cost savings of up to 40% while obtaining an instrument rating and up to 20% while obtaining a commercial pilot rating.

The Aviation program is in the College of Business Administration. Aviation majors take 18 hours of business courses and are encouraged to pursue a minor in business. The Aviation curriculum has been expanded to provide a broad background for all Aviation majors.

The goal of the ULM Aviation program is to prepare individuals to become competent, ethical, safety conscious aviation professionals, ready to assume leadership roles in various aviation management careers, or to continue their aviation education as professional pilots, or in air traffic control, dispatching, and other fields of aviation.
