Fall 2000

Fall 2000 was the first semester the College of Pure and Applied Sciences opened competition for the Undergraduate Research Awards.  Through funding from the Howard Hughes Biological Sciences Education Program, eight students received cash awards as well as money for supplies needed to conduct their research. These students worked closely with faculty mentors on projects that helped make their science education unique.

Recipients for the Fall 2000:

  • Cody Bellard

  • Amanda Dillingham

  • Lauren Beezley

  • Melissa Bicking (pictured right)

  • Christopher Davis

  • Luke LeBas

  • Justin Reynolds

  • Slade Smith

Dr. Frank Pezold worked with Melissa Bicking and Chris Davis. Melissa (pictured above) worked on the development of a microsatellite DNA primer for the spotted sleeper, Eleotris picta, from Pacific Panama.  Chris (pictured right) conducted a systematic study of the comparative morphology of fishes called fat sleepers (Teleostei: Dormitator) from coastal West Africa.

Dr. Robert Beason supervised Lauren Beezley (pictured left) in analyzing the spectral  absorption of oil droplets from the cone photoreceptors of members of the blackbird family.

Dr. Ann Findley supervised 3 students, two of which worked together on a joint project. Amanda Dillingham and Cody Bellard (not pictured) conducted a molecular analysis of wild turkey heterozygosity and MHC variation. Luke LeBas (pictured right) studied the carbohydrate metabolism of extracellulary maintained microsporidia sporoplasms.

Additionally, Dr. Sandra Davis and Dr. Mark Arant supervised students through research. Dr. Davis assisted Justin Reynolds with a preliminary study of the gynomonoecious plant, Silene noctiflora. Dr. Arant assisted Slade Smith with facile synthetic approaches to b-Tetralones, b-Napthols, and b-Hydroxyquinolines.
