Summer 2001 Awardees

Four students undertook research activity for the summer of 2001.  Melissa Bicking, Chris Davis, David Pruett, and Slade Smith competed for and received the HHMI/ULM Summer Research Program Awards that allowed them to engage in active research at off-campus institutions.  Each individual award consisted of $3,000 and the invaluable opportunity to learn new research skills.

Melissa Bicking elected to take part in research at Oregon State University. Under the direction of Dr. Michael Blouin, Department of Zoology, she worked on microsatellite DNA analysis of natural populations, a logical extension of the work she has been involved with since the fall 2000 semester at ULM.  With Dr. Frank Pezold at ULM she worked on the development of a microsatellite DNA primer for the spotted sleeper, Eleotris picta.

Chris Davis spent his summer in Mississippi where he worked with the U.S. Forest Service to identify the distribution and habitat use of Gulf sturgeon, Alabama shad, and American eels in Black and Red Creeks, DeSoto National Forest.

Two students spent the summer in a research lab at LSU's Veterinary School.  Both Slade Smith and David Pruett are interested in pursuing a career in medicine and therefore utilized their time during the summer to build upon their present skills and learn new ones.
