MOT

"I love teaching! The students are my number one priority and I want them to feel like they have a mentor and a resource. It’s exciting to help students achieve their career goal of becoming an occupational therapy practitioner. I love the fact that as a teacher I have the ability to impact the students’ lives and they can go on and impact other people’s lives in a positive way. I love watching students grow professionally and develop a love and enthusiasm for the profession of Occupational Therapy!" - Dr. Carolyn Murphy, Associate Professor & MOT Coordinator, School of Health Professions, College of Health Sciences

OTA Opportunities

The OTA to MOT Bridge Program strives to produce highly competent, ethical, caring professionals who can effect change for the better in various industries. The University of Louisiana Monroe provides many opportunities for the Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA) to earn a Bachelor's degree, so that they can make application to the Master’s in Occupational Therapy (MOT) Bridge program at ULM. Many of these programs allow the OTA graduate to transfer approximately 50-60 associate degree credit hours toward the bachelor’s degrees listed below.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of occupational therapists is projected to grow 29% from 2012 to 2022. Occupational therapy will continue to be an important part of treatment for people with various illnesses and disabilities, such as Alzheimer’s disease, cerebral palsy, autism, or the loss of a limb. With our population aging and living with disabilities or other health concerns becoming more prevalent, the need for Occupational Therapists is a necessity.

Healthcare Management/Marketing

The BSHS in Healthcare Management/Marketing degree will not only prepare OTAs for application to the MOT program at ULM, but also prepares students for mid-level managerial employment in healthcare. Students take health studies courses such as Social Epidemiology, Healthcare Law, Healthcare Ethics and business courses which include Marketing, Management, and Finance.  The BSHS degree provides a well-rounded background in healthcare business that enables students to advance in their careers with managerial responsibilities.

Psychology

The BA in Psychology degree will prepare OTAs for application to the MOT program at ULM.  OTAs who complete the BA in Psychology can move into a number of professional fields some of which are: Case Management, Career Counselor, Market Research, Psychiatric Technician, Human Resources, and Rehabilitation Specialists, just to name a few. The BA in Psychology degree program provides the presence of courses representing the cutting edge in the field.

General Studies

The Bachelors in General Studies will prepare OTAs for application to the MOT program at ULM. OTAs who complete the Bachelors in General Studies can study a broad array of subjects for their undergraduate degree and focus more on career specific training in their MOT studies.
