Current News and Events:

  • New Online Master’s Degree in Gerontology. The Louisiana Board of Regents in Higher Education and the Southern Association of Colleges have approved the offering of the Online M.A. Degree in Gerontology. We Are Now Accepting Applications for the Fall and Spring semesters.
  • The Region 8 Health Care Summit was held on the ULM Campus on Feburary 18, 2004.Over 300 participants from throughout northeast Louisiana attended. These participants represented all the various healthcare sectors and all twelve parishes identified as Region VIII. Dr. James Cofer, President, ULM opened the meeting outlining the Governor’s request and charging the group to ensure that the needs and assets of northeast Louisiana were understood by our representatives in Baton Rouge. Dr. Eric Baumgartner, Louisiana Public Health Institute, served as the facilitator of the process. Dr. James J. Bulot of the Institute of Gerontology moderated the session on Senior Health Issues. Special thanks to the the Institute of Gerontology graduate research assistants for helping to compile the information from all the sessions for the Governors Office.
  • The Institute of Gerontology and the Institute of Law Enforcement at the University of Louisana at Monroe submitted a proposal to the U.S. Department of Justice to develop an Elder Abuse Training and Resource Center for Louisiana and the surrounding region to be housed on the ULM campus.
  • Careers in Aging Week is April 5-9. Gerontology students will be giving information to persons interested in studying geronotology all week long. You can also contact the Institute for more information for career options in Gerontology.
  • The Institute of Gerontology partners with the Columbia Resoures Center on Aging and Disabilities to provide research and support to families and indivdiuals aging with disabilities.

Upcoming Events:

  • The North East Louisiana Senior Olympic Games will be Held April 20-22, 2004. The Track and Field Events will be hosted by ULM and the Institute of Gerontology. Volunteers are asked to be at Brown Stadium at 7:30 am Thursday morning.
  • The Instititute of Gerontology and C.A.B.L.E. are Co-Sponsoring the Walk for Health Aging May 14, 2004. Last year was a great success, and we expect this year to be even better.
  • Dr. Chris Johson will be leading a Study Abroad course on Dementia and Design. The course will be at Stirling University, STirling Scotland. For more information, give him a call - 318.342.1467 or email cjohnson@ulm.edu. If you are interested in sponsoring a graduate student, please let Chris know as soon as possible.
  • The Institue of Gerontology is sponsoring a regional Two Day Alzheimer's Education Conference in September 2004. The first day will be for family members and caregivers. The Second day will be for health care professionals. CEU's will be available. Check back here for more information.
  • The Institute of Gerontology will also host the regional meeting of the Louisiana Geriatrics Society in Fall 2004. Check back here for more information.
