Familiar Faces: Emily Higdon, Library, 47 years of service

Many people on campus already know Emily Higdon. She has been with the university since September 1, 1956 . “I remember the exact date because I started working on Labor Day," Emily recalls. "It wasn’t a holiday here at that time!”  Emily has worked under five university presidents including Mr. Lewis Slater, Dr. George Walker, Dr. Dwight Vines, Dr. Lawson Swearingen, and Dr. James Cofer. After almost 48 years of service at the library, Emily’s enthusiasm remains strong. “I like my job, and I am not trying for any record!” Emily said. “Things just went along and I stuck with it.”

Originally from Jeannerette, about 30 miles south of Lafayette, Emily works as a collection developer for the Library checking when orders come in and processing information for any collection. “When people donate books I look at them and decide if they go into the general collection or the special collections,” Emily said.

Emily’s two daughters, Jacqueline and Mary-Helen, have both graduated from ULM . “ ULM has been a big part of my life,” Emily said. “ Monroe has changed and the university has changed. I watched it grow, I have seen slower times, and seen some upswing, such as at the present time. I am looking forward to the changes and innovations, and I told my grandchildren to hang in there. The latest changes at ULM have been very positive. The president and his wife have worked very hard to make things more exciting. They have been very involved and very friendly.”

When asked about one of her fondest memories, Emily remembers the first library move clearly. “The first library was in Bry Hall, I remember that students helped us move it to Sandel,” she said. “Professors would bring their classes, and we gave each student ten books to carry to the new library. It was surprising how well it all worked out. After the construction of the new library was completed I thought that if we’d have to move Sandel the same way, I’d go on a vacation!”

Emily’s life philosophy is simple: “Enjoy what you are doing, enjoy your life and enjoy your family. After health problems, Emily decided to only work part-time, in the mornings. “I really enjoy what I do and the people I work with,” she said. “As long as the enjoyment is there, you have the incentive to keep on working as long as health permits.”
