2004 Promotion and Tenure

Aviation

Sally Davidson                       Associate Professor, Tenure

Ms. Davidson began learning to fly in 1971, rapidly acquiring private pilot, commercial, and instrument ratings. Flight instructor, instrument instructor, and multi-engine instructor ratings soon followed. In 1973, she established a business with a partner at the Monroe airport, offering flight instruction, charter, and airplane services. Selling the business in 1982, she eventually returned to the University as a graduate teaching assistant. After receiving her Master of Education degree in 1991, she was hired in 1993 as an instructor in the Aviation Department, "the start of the most rewarding career imaginable." She earned the Education Specialist degree in 1997 and was promoted to Assistant Professor in 1998. Her greatest satisfaction, she says, has been in helping our students succeed in the aviation field.

 

Paul Karlowitz                        Associate Professor, Tenure

Mr. Karlowitz is the Head of the Department of Aviation, to which he brings some 32 years of aviation and administrative experience. He received his B.S. in Physics from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and his M.S. in Aviation from Central Missouri State University . He joined the ULM faculty after an 11-year career as an Airport Director at both public and military airports and after retirement from the United States Air Force. He is a retired Air Force instructor pilot, simulator instructor, and classroom instructor with world-wide flight experience and over 5,000 hours of flying time in B-52s, Saberliners, Convair 440s, DC 6s, King Air 200s, and other aircraft.

Chemistry

Harry O. Brotherton Professor

Dr. Brotherton, Head of the Chemistry Department, received his Ph.D. from the University of Florida in 1982. He has been a member of the ULM Chemistry faculty for 22 years, where he has pursued his interests in teaching and analytical chemistry. A member of the ULM Graduate Council for 12 years, serving a three-year term as Chair from 2001 to 2004, Dr. Brotherton has also been a member of the American Chemical Society for 25 years, and served on the the Ouachita Valley Section of the ACS for 15 years.

Thomas Junk              Associate Professor, Tenure

Dr. Junk received his Bachelor’s from the University of Vienna ( Austria ) and his Doctorate from Texas A&M University . Following a research appointment at the Institute for Environmental Studies at LSU, he joined the faculty of ULM ’s Chemistry Department six years ago and has supervised six Master’s candidates during this time. Dr. Junk’s research interests, including the study of supercritical fluids as environmentally benign reaction media and the chemistry of the element tellurium, have resulted in 30 peer-reviewed publications to date. He has served as Chair and Secretary of the Ouachita Valley Section of the American Chemical Society and currently coordinates the Louisiana Region III Science Fair.

 
 

Richard E. Norman                Professor

Dr. Norman earned his B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. from the University of Washington , followed by post-doctoral research at the University of London and the University of Minnesota . He has been a faculty member in Chemistry and a member of the Graduate Faculty since January 1997. He has supervised the research of one Ph.D. student and ten M.S. students (five here at ULM ) and has published over 35 papers in refereed journals. He has also been an active participant in the ULM Emerging Scholars Program since its inception. Currently he is the Faculty Senate President.

 

Communications

Carl L. Thameling                  Associate Professor, Tenure

Dr. Thameling attended the University of Louisville (B.A.) and Indiana University-Bloomington (M.A. and Ph.D.). Prior to coming here, he was on the faculty of the University College of Cape Breton in Sydney , Nova Scotia , Canada , and of Miami University of Ohio. Dr. Thameling joined the Communication Department at ULM in 1998. He has published works in Small Group Research, Psychological Reports, Communication Teacher, and various other resources. Minority and majority social influence in small groups, gender differences and similarities, and effective teaching are some of his research interests. He also serves on several committees at ULM and volunteers in the community.

 

Computer Science, Mathematics & Physics

Annela Kelly                          Tenure

Dr. Kelly received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Tartu , Estonia and Master’s and Doctorate from the University of Missouri-Columbia . She led six undergraduate research projects, including three Emerging Scholars projects and has created two new classes for ULM . Her research interests, abstract harmonic analysis and combinatorial games, have produced publications, a book: The Nature of Mathematics, and presentations at national and international conferences. She has organized successful departmental High School Days. Also Dr. Kelly is the liaison for the national organization MAA and is a member of the University Curriculum Committee as well as the recipient of the ÁÃÄ honors society award for excellence in teaching.

 

Glen Schlee                            Associate Professor

Dr. Schlee, who received his Ph.D. from the University of North Texas in 1991, has been an active member of the ULM mathematics faculty for over thirteen years, teaching entry-level mathematics as well as the traditional courses for mathematics majors. His passion for teaching is evidenced by the fact that his professional interests center on undergraduate mathematics education. Dr. Schlee has presented several times at the annual International Conference of Technology in Collegiate Mathematics. Currently he serves as the coordinator of ULM ’s mathematics program.

 

English

William Ryan                         Professor

Mr. Ryan was Endowed Professor of English from 2001 to 2004. The author of a novel, two collections of poetry, and many short stories, his work has been nominated three times for the Pushcart Prize and has earned him three fellowships, including one from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, where subsequent to his award he served for three years on the Literature Panel. He co-directs the Visiting Writers Series and co-edits turnrow, the international literary journal of the English Department. Since 1990 he has also co-directed the graduate concentration in creative writing.

 

Foreign Languages

Dr. Chris Michaelides           Associate Professor

Dr. Michaelides has just published a critical anthology of nineteenthcentury Louisiana francophone literature. The volume, written in French, is entitled, Words of Honor: Writings by New Orleans Creoles of Color, 1837-1872. He also recently published an article, “The Choctaws’ Tree: Landscape Imagery in the Sacred Poetry Fr. Adrien Emmanuel Rouquette.” The third floor of Brown Hall now has multimedia “smart” classrooms with ceiling-mounted projectors and wireless Internet connectivity thanks to his being awarded a Board of Regents Enhancement Grant last year. He has also directed and codirected several other grants for technical upgrades, outreach activities, and professional development.

 

Criminal Justice

Stacy Moak                            Associate Professor, Tenure

Dr. Moak is a member of the Louisiana Bar Association, the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences , and the Southern Criminal Justice Association. She is an executive counselor for the Juvenile Justice Section of ACJS and serves on the editorial board for The Journal of Youth Violence and Juvenile Justice published by Sage Publication. She has published in such journals as the American Journal of Criminal Justice and The Juvenile and Family Court Journal. She also has served on the Board of Directors of the Children’s Coalition for Northeast Louisiana , Volunteers of America, Teen Court Board, and Court Appointed Special Advocate program as well as being faculty advisor for Lambda Alpha Epsilon (LAE), and Alpha Phi Sigma, the Director for the Institutes for Corrections and Juvenile Justice, and principal investigator on two federal grants. In addition, she presents academic papers at regional and national conferences annually.

Computer Information Systems

James T. Wood                      Associate Professor

Since joining the faculty at ULM , Dr. Wood has authored 19 academic publications and was the first holder of the George T. Walker Endowed Professor of Entrepreneurship. He has helped acquire over $300,000 in grant money and software licenses and served on the faculty senate as well as numerous department, college, and universitylevel committees. In addition, he has provided the local business community with software training, entrepreneurship training, and internet and network consulting.

Curriculum and Instruction

Beverly Flowers-Gibson        Associate Professor, Tenure

Dr. Flowers-Gibson, Director of Field Experiences and Teacher Candidacy, received her Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Specialist’s degrees from the University of Louisiana at Monroe and her Doctorate from Louisiana Tech University . She began at ULM in 1993 as an instructor and the coordinator of audiovisual services, then served as curriculum coordinator for the Computing Center , and in 1998 began teaching in the College of Education and Human Development. Her academic interests include instructional technology, internet acceptable-use policies, teacher preparation, professional development schools, and library and information science. She also serves as faculty advisor for the ULM Student Chapter of the Associated Professional Educators of Louisiana.

Communicative Disorders

Linda Bryan                           Tenure

Ms. Bryan is a licensed speech-language pathologist and assistant professor in the department of Communicative Disorders (CODI). For the past three years, she has been a full-time faculty member at ULM and a full-time doctoral student in the ULL Applied Language and Speech Science program. She is currently ABD, having completed her coursework emphasizing language and literacy, and expects to graduate in December 2004. Linda was awarded the Endowed Professorship in Communicative Disorders in the spring of 2004 and established a Literacy Clinic, offering a service to the children in the community while providing opportunities for CODI graduate students to further enhance their clinical skills.

School of Nursing

Linda Reid                              Tenure

Ms. Reid, the Interim Director of the School of Nursing (SON), has 27 years of clinical nursing experience and 11 years of teaching experience, developing online courses as well as teaching traditional courses, such as Trends in Nursing and Labor and Delivery. Also, she has presented continuing education programs in local meetings and conferences. In addition, she has served on numerous committees as well as chairing the SON Assessment and Evaluation Committee. Currently she is the President of the Lambda Mu Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and belongs to several professional organizations. Honors received include the ULM Outstanding Professor of the College of Nursing in 2001, Nurse Educator of the Year in 2002, and the Sister Jerome Crowley Endowed Professorship in 2001 and 2004.

School of Pharmacy

W. Greg Leader                     Professor

Dr. Leader, the Associate Dean and Director of the School of Pharmacy , received his B.S. in Pharmacy from ULM and completed his Doctor of Pharmacy and clinical research fellowship at the University of Kentucky . He has been named Outstanding Faculty of the Year, assisted in the development of the Louisiana Medicaid Prior Authorization Program housed in The University of Louisiana’s Office of Outcomes Research and Evaluation, and currently is a Fellow in the American Association of Colleges of Pharmacy Leadership Program. In addition, he serves on the editorial board of THE ANNALS OF PHARMACOTHERPY and the exam review committee for the NABP Disease State Management Exams.

 

Edwin H. Adams                     Associate Professor, Tenure

Dr. Adams received his Bachelor’s Degree in Pharmacy from ULM and earned the Doctor of Pharmacy degree from the University of Arkansas in 1997. In 1998, he completed residency training at the Milton S. Hershey Medical Center in Hershey , Pennsylvania . His specialty area of practice has centered on the ambulatory management of such chronic illnesses as diabetes and hypertension. Additionally, Dr. Adams is one of only a few Certified Geriatric Pharmaco-therapists in Louisiana . He has been recognized both locally and nationally for his commitment to student leadership development. He received the Distinguished Young Pharmacist of the Year Award in 1997 and the distinguished Grant-Collens Award in 2002 for his service to pharmacy in Louisiana . In 2001 he was awarded the Albert B. Prescott/Glaxo Smith-Kline National Leadership Award.

Susan M. Sirmans                  Tenure

Dr. Sirmans received her Bachelor’s of Pharmacy at Auburn University and her Doctor of Pharmacy at the Medical University of South Carolina. She completed a fellowship in cardiovascular therapeutics at the University of Tennessee and Marion Laboratories in Kansas City . She was board certified as a Pharmacotherapy Specialist in 1994. After six years with the University of Oklahoma , she joined the faculty of ULM in 1999 as clinical coordinator and has served as interim head of the Department of Clinical and Administrative Sciences since October of 2003. Her interest areas are the history of pharmacy in Louisiana and pharmacist involvement in the management of chronic diseases.
