Pharmacy professors sweep awards at recent conference

The University of Louisiana at Monroe College of Pharmacy swept all poster presentation awards at the annual Louisiana Society of Health System Pharmacists meeting in New Orleans.

Prizes were awarded for outstanding posters in four categories: Clinical, Administrative, Student, and Primary Research. ULM College of Pharmacy faculty and students won all four categories.

Drs. Candace Chelette and Roxie Stewart won the Clinical category for their poster, “Assessment of Public’s Comprehension of Medication Auxiliary Labels.”

The Administrative winners were Drs. Anthony Walker, Candace Chelette, Roxie Stewart, and Ph.D. Candidate Gagan Jain for their poster, “Effects of Active Learning in a Sterile Products Elective on Comprehensive Advance Practice Experience Examinations.”

The Research winners were Drs. Gregory Smith, Emily Weidman Evans, and Scott Baggarly for their poster, “Enhancing Students’ Knowledge and Confidence for Evaluating Internet Health-Related Resources.”

Students Kieu Nguyen of Kenner and Kristian Fruge of Kinder won the Student Poster category for “Emergency Preparedness & Your Health: Helping Senior Citizens of Louisiana Prepare for Hurricane Season.” Drs. Marty Steffenson, Ann Wicker and Jessica Brady mentored the students.

Other institutions also presenting posters at the meeting included Xavier University, LSU Health Sciences Center in Shreveport and Ochsner’s Medical Center in New Orleans.

The theme for this year’s LSHP Annual Meeting Interactive Poster Session was “Focus on Patient Safety: High Risk Drugs, Sterile and Non-sterile Preparation, National Patient Safety Goals and Medication Safety.” LSHP is a professional organization formed to advance public health by promoting the professional interests of pharmacists practicing in hospitals and other organized healthcare settings in Louisiana.
