Achieving emphasis with dependent clauses

Combine the following pairs of sentences by converting one in each pair into a dependent clause.

Example: The Industrial Revolution brought people into factories. At an earlier time, people's work and home lives were intertwined.

Before the Industrial Revolution brought people into factories, their work and home lives were intertwined.

1.  Work began to be concentrated in factories. At this point the time people spent on the job became time spent away from the family.

2.  Time spent on the job began to take precedence. The reason for this was that the worker's wages kept the family fed and clothed.

3.  A worker spent more time at the factory. This worker was viewed as a dedicated family man.

4.  Women did not work in the factories. They only worked if they were unmarried, or at least childless.

5.  Managers measured a worker's worth by time spent on the job. The reason managers did this was that they were responsible for production.

6.  A worker took time off to tend to a sick family member. That worker was considered undependable.

7.  Managers still measure worth in terms of hours. This happens despite the fact that the assembly fine is no longer the model of American industry

8.  More women with children enter the workforce. This phenomenon has caused managers to reluctantly rethink their ideas about time and worth.

9.  Human services professionals have studied work/family problems. These same human services professionals encourage corporations to become more flexible about time spent on the job.

 10.  At some point corporations win become more sensitive to the time constraints faced by workers. Meanwhile, both family and business will suffer.
