Summary/Paraphrase 2: Write a summary/paraphrase of a magazine article

Find a 10-15 page source from the library, the web, or Lexis - Nexus that comes from one of the following magazines:

Atlantic Monthly
CommonWeal
The Nation
The Economist

Harper's Magazine
The Christian Science Monitor
Mother Jones
The New Republic

Utne
More to be listed.

Follow the model for the first summary-paraphrases you did with the following qualifications:

Be about half a page (single-spaced) of coherent prose (it should read like an independent essay);
Use lead-ins followed by brief partial quotes which are integrated into your own sentences;
After all quoted material use an in-text citation;
Be free of grammar and mechanical errors;
Use a full citation for a title [See Item 28. Article in a Monthly Magazine, page 284 of the Everyday Writer for form];
Use Times New Roman 12 pt font.

Turn in a hardcopy of the summary/paraphrase and a photocopy of the original article with your reading marks and annotations.

Rubric:

Does the summary/paraphrase accurately reflect the ideas of the original?

Does the summary/paraphrase follow the instructions above and in previous summary/paraphrase practices to the letter?

Is the summary clear and to the point and able to stand alone as if it were a tiny little independent essay?

Are the grammar/mechanics taken care of?
