Black Studies Minor

An interdisciplinary minor,  Black Studies is the only minor of its kind in Northern Louisiana. Housed primarily in the English and History programs, the minor offers students a chance to study with renowned scholars, including Dr. Jaleesa Harris (English) and Dr. Jeffrey Anderson (History), as students explore the wide variety of courses and internship opportunities which the minor offers.

Courses

A truly interdisciplinary minor, the Black Studies Minor is centered in History and English but also incorporates courses from World Languages and Political Science. At the heart of the proposal are three required courses and three elective courses, including sophomore-level literature courses on African American literature and history courses focused on African American history and primary source documents. Students can work with their advisors to schedule the necessary 18 hours from a list of courses that are regularly offered.

Internships and Career Opportunities

Students can take advantage of existing internship courses offered by English and History to gain valuable experience and discover how to use the skills they work on and master in the minor. Professors work with students to pinpoint locations and internships suitable for their particular path and career goals.
