The Certificate in Professional and Creative Writing prepares students for careers as creative writers, technical writers, editors, or teachers, but also for any career that demands creative thinking and clear expression. Drawing on the diverse talents of the English faculty, the Certificate provides students with an intensive, practical writing experience in their choice of creative genres (poetry, fiction, and creative nonfiction), as well as courses in professional, technical, scientific, and grant writing. In intensive workshops of limited size, students write, revise, and learn to publish professionally.
In pursuit of the certificate, students take 6 hours of sophomore-level English courses, which range from the study of rhetoric to the surveys and themed courses focusing on specific authors and time periods. In consultation with their advisor, students choose another 12 hours (4 courses) from a list of Creative Writing and Professional, Scientific, and Technical Writing courses. With strengths in grant writing, science and medical writing, and digital writing, the faculty help students build courses for the certificate that give them the tools to find employment, post graduation.
Students gain valuable experience not only in courses, but also in internships and opportunities outside the classroom. From the Write Place on campus to off-campus clients and employers, students can practice writing skills under the supervision of English faculty.
