Spanish for Medical Professionals

This undergraduate certificate is a must-have for anyone working in the medical professions.  The program equips students and healthcare providers with the language and cultural skills needed to communicate effectively with Spanish-speaking patients in clinical and community settings. Designed for students in fields such as pre-medicine, nursing, pharmacy, speech-language pathology, radiologic technology, and other health professions, the certificate combines foundational Spanish language study with intermediate and advanced coursework focused on medical communication, cultural competency, and translation skills. Taught by faculty experienced in medical Spanish, the curriculum is offered through regularly scheduled courses, including online options for foundational study, allowing students to build practical proficiency that supports patient care, improves provider-patient relationships, and prepares graduates to serve the growing Hispanic population in Louisiana and beyond.

Note:


Students who enter ULM with a strong background in Spanish may obtain credit for 1001, 1002, 2005 through a credit exam.

4005 and 4020 will have several units working with medical vocabulary as well as expanding communication skills in general.
