Seeking Additional Courses for Licensure

Due to the advancements in CACREP and state licensure boards, many clinical mental health and school counselors need additional credit hours to fulfill the 60-hour requirement for licensure or certification. In addition, many state licensure boards require specific courses that are outside of the eight core areas of Professional Counseling.

Our program offers elective coursework that can help individuals who have earned a masters degree in counseling obtain clinical licensure and school certification in their respective state. The electives that we provide are the following:

Individuals who want to take courses to complete their licensure/certification requirements must apply to the Graduate School as a non-degree seeking student, the link to apply is here. Once admitted as non-degree seeking status, the Director of the Counseling Program must approve the student to take whichever courses they need. Please note that non-degree seeking students will only be approved to take a course if there is room available. The students enrolled in the Counseling Program at ULM will have first priority in order to keep them on track for graduation.

Individuals who have graduated from the Counseling Program at ULM with a concentration in School Counseling and who are in good standing are permitted to take COUN 5065 Practicum and COUN 6070 Internship. Students who have degrees from other programs and in other professions are not permitted to take these courses, nor can they take elective coursework in Psychology or Marriage and Family Therapy through the Counseling Program. 

The tuition for non-degree students is the same as other students, $500 a credit hour.
